SMR was thrilled to celebrate the reopening of the historic YWCA Seneca building. Working with YWCA Seattle King Snohomish, Andersen Construction, and Brawner & Company to preserve this Seattle landmark while modernizing it for future generations has been an extraordinary privilege. Dating back to 1912 as Seattle’s first building specifically designed for women and girls, this remarkable structure has provided shelter and services for over a century. The $63 million renovation now offers 114 upgraded affordable housing units, state-of-the-art building systems, and vibrant community spaces that honor its original mission while meeting today’s needs.
Our design team approached this historic preservation project with deep reverence for the building’s legacy, carefully maintaining its architectural integrity and historic essence while seamlessly integrating modern amenities and accessibility features. From upgrading mechanical and electrical systems to creating welcoming gathering spaces, we worked to ensure this landmark building will continue serving Seattle’s community for generations to come. Congratulations to the project team!
